Gabe Gibler has been with us for several years. At first he just happened onto our farm occasionally as a volunteer lending a hand with various construction projects, potato or carrot diggings, etc. In 1998, he started packaging food for us on a part-time basis. He mixed our foods, making sure my recipes are mixed accurately. He's good at paying attention to detail. His sharp eye has saved us a mistake or two or three ... Now, he works in various capacities around the farm. He maintains our computer network and our large photo database, keeps our packaging and food information up to date, and even fills in as a bookkeeper when needed.
Gabe is an Idaho native. His younger years were spent in Lewiston and Twin Falls. For me, having Gabe around is how I imagine it would be like to work with a monk or zen master. Gabe is quiet, methodical and thorough when he works. He speaks carefully and thoughtfully and never in excess. He always has a ready smile. He is exceedingly bright at things like math and spelling. While he packages food, a monotonous job, he listens to tapes and learns foreign languages. He is a student of brazilian jiu-jitsu and practices it. His hobbies are drawing and biking. I can tell where Gabe has sat to ponder the world because I find his sketches. He sketches our pots and pans, anything around him, even trees from our restroom window. His artwork came in handy when we designed our web pages. He is intrigued with the science of Celtic, the Druidic way of knowing. If Gabe has touched your food, consider it blessed.
Gabe quietly asked if I had information that would allow him to comment on this year's proposed ‘National Organic Standards.’ Of course I do. Every morning when I check my e-mail, it feels like I open flood gates. It's overwhelming really. I passed a few things on to Gabe. Below is his response. I like it. It's long. Like I said, he's very thorough. However, it doesn't drown in acronyms and government-speak nonsense. He said some things that are worth repeating. I like his common sense approach. I've included it here for you to read and ponder.
