Dear MaryJane,

First, let me thank you for a great magazine, which I read completely and then shared with family and friends.

When the "Shoulder to the Wheel" issue arrived, my daughters wanted to make the handbags from recycled calendars. Both had an old calendar, and with your detailed pattern, they turned out beautifully! I am enclosing a picture of Corrie, age 17, with her Mary Engelbreit calendar bag. She made the strap longer and more durable so she can use it for school.

I first heard of your company, magazine and farm from my step-dad, Gary Wilde, your cousin in Ogden. He and my mom met you at your dad’s funeral. (By the way, I love the tribute to him!) Mom and Gary were so impressed with you and your organic farm, and so are my husband and I. We support our local farmers’ market and dream of leaving the 9-5 grind and growing our own goats and veggies. We live on a two-acre yard/farm/wildflower garden, and would love to someday drive up and visit you. I sense we have a lot in common and that we think the same, because we have the same family photos! I can find one of my little blonde sister in her dance outfit (of course Mom made it) that looks just like you in the Art of the Egg issue. Our dads were cut from the same cloth and our moms were the Marion Cunningham types who made sure we had homemade food, clothes and fun. We were raised with the same ideas and strengths, and we’ve both raised our kids the same way.

Your Organic 3-Grain Cereal took me right back to first grade in Canada, where we needed that substance in our bellies to last until noon when we walked home for lunch.

I’ve shared my past issues with a couple of friends who are campers, vegetarians or organic types, and hope the word spreads. We will plan a trip some fall or spring to see you, so until then, best of luck!!

Pam

P.S. Thanks so much for not selling my name — I work at the Postal Service and know how much I and others hate unwanted ads!

Hey Cindylou,

I meant to write on the day the shoes arrived, but work has me bogged down. The shoes are absolutely fabulous!!! I love the color of the brown leather and better yet, they make my feet feel so good! I have already worn them and didn’t even have to break them in. What a nice change … I do feel like my middle name should be Imelda myself, but I believe a woman can never have too many shoes!!! Out of curiosity, how many pairs do you have?

Talk to you soon,
Elke

Hi Cindylou,

I’m still wearing the shoes, especially since the weather is not warm enough for sandals. I can’t believe how comfortable they are!

Work at Fort Drum has sped up again, soldiers are coming back from deployment and are heading back out within the next few weeks.

I drove up to Kingston, Canada, this past weekend and bought some fresh fruit from the farmers' market. Crossing the border is almost like going to a different time (think twilight zone); better restaurants (with vegetarian menus, no less), real bakeries, ethnic cuisines, friendlier people. You might think I’m exaggerating, but believe me, I’m not!

Talk with you soon I hope,
Elke
