Dear MaryJane ...

I wanted to let you know how special the Farmgirl Connection chatroom is to me. I have met some of the most wonderful friends that have been there for me when things are good and when things are rough! I live in a little town in Arizona and never imagined I would meet any other farmgirls here, and yet today I did! We got to visit for about three hours, took pictures, and laughed so hard we had tears in our eyes. It was not like we were strangers at all; it was like we were sisters of a rare kind. I can’t begin to thank you enough for starting all of this!

I have enjoyed your magazine, and now I am translating many items for the four women’s co-ops that I am working with here in Panama with the Peace Corps. Your teardrop trailer and the piece by the volunteer in Guatemala are favorites. Men love your magazine too!

I just ordered your magazine for my stepmother and the other ladies and two men who live in a rural assisted living home in Salubria, Idaho. They have 15 residents, all of them farmgirls for real. They are engaged and engaging in all aspects of their life, even the ones they can’t always remember. They have lived the lifestyle that you write about, and I am hoping that it will remind them and encourage them to offer bits of knowledge and add that wonder back into their lives. Thanks for doing what you do!

I got the Makin’ Hay issue in the mail this past Tuesday, and BOY, OH BOY!! With each new issue, I fall more and more in love with the spirit of the farmgirl! Thank you for showing me how to make the most of my life, and how to “preserve my harvest!” It feels amazing to be living more and more off the work of my own two hands. Each issue is a treasure!

Your magazine has touched me deeply. It is wonderful to realize that my dream is shared by you and many other women (and men). My farmgirl’s heart belongs to a small farm in northern Illinois. The property was bought in 1898 by my great-grandparents. Through happy circumstance, my grandmother, father, and I were all born and raised on this farm. Throughout my life, I was told stories of my great-grandparents’ adventures moving from Nebraska to Illinois, my grandmother’s memories of being a happy farmgirl and young wife, and my dad’s rowdy days and gentle dreams for the future. My own childhood was joyful and full of sweet characters, both human and animal. My dream is to be able to return to live permanently on my farm. I know you understand when I tell people that this farm is my heart. It has a personality—a sense of humor, sweet stories to tell, an occasional feeling of melancholy, a welcome hug that envelopes me. It has a soul that I cannot abandon.
