January 2009

No Class (but a few suggestions for new gardeners):

  • Use this time to learn from other gardeners and the Extension agent in your area what your growing zone is, what the last frost date usually is, and when the first frost of the winter usually happens.
  • Ask them what grows very successfully in your region, given your area’s average climate and soil.
  • Discuss with your family what they would like to grow and the size garden they’d like to help care for. (Hint: grow mostly what your family likes to eat! Try not to grow everything that seems like it might be fun to try.) Better to start with a small successful garden, than to start too huge (which can get out of hand with the watering and weeding) and make everyone cringe at the idea of ever trying any size garden again!
  • Draw your garden on paper to plan areas.
  • Check out gardening books from the library or research online for how much space to devote to what to feed your family or for growing extra.
  • Start looking through garden seed catalogs and online for the proper seeds for your zone.

February 2009

No Class (but a few more suggestions):

  • Order your seeds as early as possible; seed sales are up!
  • Study books and magazines for more gardening ideas and tips.
  • Refine your garden plan on paper.
  • Dream of warmer weather to come!
