50 women who care by MaryJane Butters Sometime in the early '90s, a tiny little book called 50 Things You Can Do To Save the Earth turned up everywhere. I saw it at the houses of friends, business lunch rooms, kitchen tables, grocery check-out counters, even public restrooms. This little book gave us 50 simple things to do to keep us from feeling so helpless. Soon after, the publicity women at Tambrands, maker of Tampax, decided they would publish a book called 50 Women Who Are Saving the Earth. From all 50 states, they sought nominations for each states winner. Based upon my antinuclear, environmental activist work, I was chosen as Idahos woman. I was flown to New York City. The hotel room I had to myself was filled
with fresh flowers and a chocolate apple had been placed upon my turned-down
bed. The next day I met the other 49 women. We were wined and dined and
honored for four days. This picture of us survived my 1995 farmhouse fire,
but the names of the women didnt. Over the next year, Im going
to take the time to locate as many as I can. Im curious about how
their lives have continued and what theyre doing. Id like
to be in touch. If you are one of these women or know one of them, please
let me know. As I renew these friendships, Im going to be looking
for news from 49 states from |
