I was in WalMart the other day with a friend and was looking over their oranges and other citrus. They all had notices that, before shipping, they all were sprayed with chemicals to keep them fresh and mold "free." If a person is wanting to stay away from chemicals entirely in their cleaning products, they may want to purchase organic oranges or make sure that they have not been sprayed, as those chemicals will surely end up in the vinegar that they will be spraying in their home.

good call Suzanne! Eventhough I washed my oranges thoroughly, I think that might have caused my "cloudy" problem.

I made this using grapefruit peels. I put them in quart canning jars, sealed and left in our Texas sun for 2 days. I strained through coffee filters -- it smells great ! Thanks for the tip.

I made the orange-vinegar cleaner and it is wonderful! Also, it's a great ant killer. Our yearly invasion started last week in my kitchen. I had the cleaner in my hand and just sprayed the ants and Poof!- dead. And no hazardous chemicals. :)

Has anyone tried with herbs? My grapefruit peels worked so well as soon as my basil plant is full, I'm going to try it.

Wonderful idea! I'm going to make up some for my 87 yold mother. Im concerned with what she may get out and use. This way I'd know she's safe. I think I'll love the orange or grapefruit smell as I clean. Thank you for sharing. Hugs,Brenda

This is amazing! I use all natural soaps/shampoo...I have a navy blue soaking tub and sinks. The people who owned the tub before us used abrasives to clean it. They scratched it up. I have been trying and trying to figure out what to use to get the residues out of the tub/sinks without harsh chemicals or abrasive. Just a light spray and a soft cloth and no effort and it was gone. I don't even have to worry about it not being thoroughly rinsed. I love the way it smells too! Thanks so much!!

The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.

Megan,

I was wondering if you could post your recipes for your gardeners soap, vanilla extract and the violet & dandelion jelly, which sounds wonderful! And what a great idea to use them for Christmas gifts!!

Thanks!

Suzanne,

Thanks for the heads up about the chemicals sprayed on the oranges. Don't think I would have thought about it, which should be a given these days unless you buy anything that isn't organic!

Ladies - I made basil fragranced vinegar for cleaning. I packed a quart canning jar with basil and then filled with vinegar. A few days in the sun. I strained it through a coffee filter, three different times. It smells great!

I can't wait to try different vinegars, as I keep a spray bottle of vinegar water in my kitchen to clean with. I have some basil growing, also will try grapefruit. I wonder about rosemary, thyme, lemon balm??? I have some of that in my herb garden. Can't hurt to try what we have on hand.

Pasthyme - I haven't tried any except for the grapefruit and the basil. I thought of basil because of the Mrs Myers basil fragranced cleaning items. Let us know if you try the other herbs.
