4/18/2015 Talking about Emily Dickinson’s love of flower gardens led me down the garden path to remember another story about a famous artist who’s known for his paintings, but not especially for the passion that drove him: his gardens.

I’m talking about Monet on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1G4wnlB

4/19/2015 (MBA Jane ) For this week’s Outpost/Pampered Pets Intermediate Level Merit Badge, I took my love for Mr. Darcy even further.

No, not that Mr. Darcy, though I do love him, too. But no, it’s my Labradoodle, Mr. Darcy, who keeps my feet warm at night and who keeps my hearth and home protected … http://bit.ly/1Egz7P7

4/21/2015 What you may not yet know about “mew” (myoo) is that it’s a master of deceptive simplicity. With just one syllable, mew manages to function as both noun and verb, and it has eight—count ‘em, EIGHT—definitions.

4/29/2015 It was fun to hear someone use the term “higgledy-piggledy” the other day.

Say what?

You know, higgledy–piggledy, hodge-podge, hurly-burly. These words have more in common than their shared meaning: confusion or disorder. They’re formally called “reduplicative compounds,” meaning paired words that usually differ only in a vowel or consonant. Commonly, they’re called “ricochet words.” Think nitty-gritty, lovey-dovey, tick-tock. Just saying them seems to make the sound ricochet around the room.

Want to know my favorite? I’ll share on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1DKDVXD

5/2/2015 It’s here! Our first annual Farmgirl Jubilee. Farmgirls are celebrating far and wide by gathering together (in person or online); we’re going glamping; making Jubilee banners; and in some instances, spending a reverent day alone in the garden, in a hammock, or on a mountaintop.
Dream it! Make it! Bake it! Shake it! I’m sure more photos will be rolling in …
Here’s a sample of the many banners with more on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1Iz7OQi

5/3/2015 Take a stab at this word, girls: pulchritudinous.

Say it aloud: puhl-kri-tood-n-uhs.

Say it three times, and try not to, well … gag. Seriously, this just isn’t a very pretty word. Any guesses as to its meaning? I suspect you’re thinking something in this vein …

While pulchritudinous may not sound pretty, it actually means pretty. Not pulling your leg, promise … http://bit.ly/1ICKyAO

5/4/2015 (Meg) In our 21st century world, plastic is everywhere, especially plastic bottles with the widely-known abbreviation of PET. PET refers to polyethylene terephthalate, a substance found in nearly 80% of the bottles on Earth. Polyethylene terephthalate is derived from oil and does not degrade in nature, and PET bottles are quickly becoming the mascot for the pollution that’s clogging the world’s landscapes and oceans. Since PET won’t decompose, the bottles have to be collected and recycled.

This overabundance of plastic bottles has turned out to be a goldmine for Czech artist Veronika Richterová … http://bit.ly/1cdYWmX

5/5/2015 Here’s a fun little personality test you can take online. Understanding your basic nature can “help you learn how to use your strengths, increase your self-confidence, improve your relationships, and discover your ideal career and personal development paths.” 16Personalities has developed a test using both Jungian theories and modern developments to help you do just that.

There’s a link to the test on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1KJQUxA

5/7/2015 Locating the perfect place to pitch camp can be a challenge. While the Internet has endless info on where to go, it’s not always easy to pin down a campground that has exactly what you’re looking for in an outdoor getaway. Does it allow dogs? Are grills provided? How far is the nearest shower? Hopping from website to website in search of answers can take hours.

Not anymore … http://bit.ly/1QqLDhi

5/10/2015 (MBA Jane) For this week’s Make It Easy/Candlemaking Intermediate Level Merit Badge, I was thrilled to put all my candlemaking know-how into action. I gathered my supplies and got to work to make two entirely different types and scents of candles to gift to two entirely different girlfriends. You don’t have to gift them to girlfriends—I can attest to my own Mr. Wonderful loving a good Cracklin’ Fire taper, or an Autumn Leaves pillar. Well, actually he requested a Bacon and Sausage scent, but … yeah. Haven’t exactly found a meat-scented essential oil yet.

I have 2 candle ideas to share on Raising Jane: http://bit.ly/1cEx9w6

5/11/2015 (Meg) One of the many benefits of living near two state universities is the steady flow of art and culture they bring to the geographical area I call home. Recently, I had the pleasure of a free afternoon in which I found myself wandering among a poignant collection of work by street photographer Vivian Maier that was on display at the Washington State University Museum of Art. I was really struck by the candid nature of her photos, and when I returned home, I did a little more research on this fascinating woman … http://bit.ly/1F9c73e
