What’s your garden nemesis?
Mine… Grasshoppers!
Last year and this year they decimated my roses and sunflowers!!!
Where are my bug eating birds when I need them?!?!

So far it is the heat here in Southeast Texas. I am barely keeping my bucket garden alive.

| We live top of a hill, so the wind can do/does damage to so many plants. Our hoop house helps with heat loving plants & we are making plans to use more row cover next year. |

I feel like gardening is becoming more of a challenge these past few years…
I use to literally toss seeds into the ground and they would grow like weeds… now , up here anyway… these past four years I have had
To work at gardening,,, that being said, this was all wheat farming and back in the 1950-60‘s many ( not all ) farmers bought into
The ‚Monsanto chemical additive to the soil,, including the farmer who owned this property before us, he was big into using chemical
Weed sprays. Now our soil is low quality and even though I have
brought in top soil,, still have learning curves.
My dear neighbor, Julia Hayes, who has an article in the MJF magazine, tried to establish her place as Organic, had do many challenges, including being able to prove that her surrounding neighbors did not use chemicals and had not for 5 years, the farmer here still used aggressive weed
Spray and wasn’t about to stop using the spray, and he was growing live stock hay!
Anyway, I luv gardening and will do so until I am physically unable to. I will just have to work a bit harder and more creative!

Biggest nemesis of my garden?? Earwigs…they make me grumpy

Oh Grace my biggest nemesis are squash bugs! They put up a never ending fight and seem to always win. I have 1 plant left out of 5. They took the rest. They honestly make me want to give up. I'm considering taking a break from all plants that squash bugs like next year in hopes they go elsewhere.

I would have to say right now, potato bugs. Though this year I have not had many, thank goodness. I picked about 6 young ones tonight,ick.

Forgot to mention we finally got rain last night and inch and 2 tenths. that is exciting, as we have been dry June and July.

Here in Florida...what don't we have as garden pests and as soil pests???!!! It seems like you have to often opt for raised beds is there is to be any hope of actually harvesting something. Even then, it can be iffy.

I know is sounds terrible - mine is my father in law LOL! He gets a bit too excited and hoes things he shouldn't! This year he took out an entire row of marigolds, borage, and basil. The non human pests here are squash bugs and Japanese beetles.
Krista - try planting some borage around your squash plants. It seemed to help a lot this year for me! Plus it makes a wonderfully refreshing iced tea!

Oh My Gosh I started out with 4 Borage seeds and each year I have them popping up everywhere! lol!
But I do love Borage in the garden...

Thanks Heather. I haven’t heard of borage before but I’m willing to give it a try. I tried planting the marigolds all around them this year but they didn’t even phase the squash bugs. It’s like they have super powers or something.

Chipmunks are my garden nemesis. The little buggers plucked every tomato off a vine I had been growing on my deck. I got so fed up with them swiping every tomato that I removed the plant from it's container. They are always digging up something in a container or garden. Some people think they are cute, needless to say I'm not one of them!

Pheasants are my nemaesis. Every morning Mr. Pheasant crows at me. I have come to the conclusion he is just warning me that he has already been to the garden and sampled the strawberries, the tomatoes, cucumbers and whatever else strikes his fancy. He pecks just a few holes in each and moves on to the next one. Drives me crazy. I always tell him he is going to be lunch come pheasant season, but by than he is hiding out away from my garden.
A little rain can straighten a flower stem. A little love can change a life.

Grace, let’s do it! To be honest I don’t think many grasshoppers will survive my children lol. I don’t know what it is about grasshoppers and how many times I tell my kids to be soft they always die. It’s probably due to the fact that they each have to hold him and fight over who gets to do it first and who’s next! Send them my way. My kids will help your problem.

Squash bugs. Destroyed all my squash plants this year. Same happened two years ago in the same garden bed.
